Who: One-man band Kishore Krishna’s pop projectWhere: Chennai

How: Krishna is only 20, but shows a wealth of songwriting skill. Influences include heavy hitters who can write timeless classics – Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Sonic Youth, Nick Drake Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Johnny Cash to name a few.

What: AATFEP is Krishna showing off a pop sensibility in crafting intelligent, multi-genre songs (dare I tag him as ‘alternative’?). He’s also able to introduce structure such that it doesn’t confine his melodic ideas. And while a lot of pop simply builds upon a catchy chorus, AATFEP celebrates every moment in each track, making each listen feel like you’re watching a film. Krishna uses atmospheric backgrounds, blips, bleeps, keys and varied percussion in his tasteful arrangements that slowly grow on you.

Krishna tells dark fairy tales, explores love and lust and looks within for lyrics, and every yarn he spins is fascinating. Check out Snake Scar Blues (my current favourite), the lo-fi Black-eyed Monster and the slow-burning Sheepdog to get a taste. We’re eagerly awaiting Krishna’s album release, and would love to see him perform with a full band that can bring his music to life, although that’d be no mean feat. Draw the curtains, turn down the lights and press play. AATFEP will take care of the rest.
