What: Fresh, intelligent piano-driven pop from this talented Chennai crooner. Gopalan showcases her multi-genre influences including trip-hop, R&B and old-school whisky-bar jazz. However, the tracks she’s made available thus far sound like she’s playing it safe – there’s tremendous potential here to blaze some new trails and go places where Sara Bareilles and Fiona Apple haven’t gone so far. However, the set is still very enjoyable, and indeed leaves you wanting a well-produced full-length album.
‘You’re My Blue Sky‘, a breezy, uplifting little track, does well to sum up most of Gopalan’s skills, but ‘Remix‘ and ‘Good, Bad and Ugly‘ show that there’s more than meets the ear – some electronica and jazz allow her to show off her diverse songwriting abilities. If it’s easy listening you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place: Gopalan serves it up fresh and tasty.
